Bihar is set to become more self-reliant in power generation as the second unit of the Buxar Thermal Power Project in Chausa prepares for operations. This expansion will significantly boost the state’s electricity supply by providing an additional 561 MW of power. With the project reaching its full capacity of 1320 MW, residents can expect more stable and uninterrupted power across the state.

How much electricity will Bihar get from the Buxar project?

The total capacity of the Buxar Thermal Power Plant is 1320 MW, divided into two units of 660 MW each. While the first unit has been operational since August 2025, the second unit will soon add its share to the national grid. Out of the total generation, Bihar’s share is expected to reach 1122 MW, which is roughly 85% of the total output. This will help the state reduce its dependency on buying expensive power from outside sources and provide better service to consumers.

Key details about the Buxar Power Project and new rules

  • The project is developed by SJVN Thermal Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this plant on March 9, 2019.
