Bihar is set to witness a major political shift as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar prepares to move to the Rajya Sabha. Following his election to the Council of States, the process for forming a new government in the state is expected to begin soon. This transition marks the end of a long era in Bihar politics and paves the way for a new leadership structure under the NDA alliance.

When will Nitish Kumar resign and what happens next?

Nitish Kumar was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2026. Following this, he resigned from his Bihar Legislative Council seat on March 30 to maintain his new position. The formal oath-taking ceremony is expected on April 10, 2026. This timeline suggests he will step down from the Chief Minister office around April 14, 2026. The state government has already issued orders to ensure he retains Z-plus security after his resignation. Additionally, his long-time principal secretary Chanchal Kumar has been moved to a central role in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

Who are the potential candidates for the next Chief Minister?

The focus has now shifted to who will lead Bihar next. The BJP is likely to appoint the new Chief Minister, with names like Samrat Choudhary and Nityanand Rai being at the forefront of discussions. Dilip Kumar Jaiswal is also considered a strong candidate for the post. The current NDA cabinet, which took shape in late 2025, features 26 ministers where BJP holds 14 positions. For the first time in two decades, the Home Department was not kept by Nitish Kumar and is currently with the BJP. This shift indicates a prepared transition for the new leadership starting mid-April.
