Ghaziabad City to Change its Name

On Tuesday, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation approved a proposal to change the name of Ghaziabad. Mayor Sunita Devi Dayal stated that three names, Harinandi Nagar, Gajaprasth, and Doodheshwarnath Nagar have been proposed for the new name. The proposed names will be presented to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who will make the final decision.

Central Approval Required for Name Change

However, any name change would ultimately require approval from the Centre. “The proposal to change Ghaziabad’s name has been passed with a full majority by the councillors. The new name will be decided by the CM,” she said. The Mayor further added, “These names have been suggested keeping in mind the demands of the people of Ghaziabad and Hindu organisations.”

Ghaziabad was Once Part of Hastinapur

Meanwhile, Narayan Giri, the chief priest of Doodheshwarnath temple, stated that he had suggested three names to the Chief Minister last year. According to Giri, the names are related to the Mahabharata, as the current Ghaziabad district was formerly part of Hastinapur.

Name Changed by Akbar’s Companion Ghaziuddin

Giri further explained that this region was a dense forest inhabited by elephants, referred to as ‘Gaj’ in Hindi. Giri claimed that this is why Ghaziabad was called Gajaprasth. He also stated that Ghaziuddin, a close companion of Mughal Emperor Akbar, had changed the name to Ghaziabad.
