Greaves Electric Mobility (GEM) caught in FAME-II subsidy dispute
- GEM, along with other electric two-wheeler brands, finds itself in trouble amidst the FAME-II subsidy controversy.
- GEM claims that it is not a part of the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) and has taken steps to distance itself and its sub-brand, Ampere Electric, from the lobby’s comments.
- An official notice has been sent to the EV lobby by CarandBike, stating that GeM is neither a member of SMEV nor associated with it.
GEM claims it is not a member of SMEV
- GEM’s letter states that GeM has been listed as a general member among SMEV’s regular members on the latter’s website, which creates a false impression that they are “SMEV members”.
- A quick check on SMEV’s website confirms that the lobby has updated its list of members, removing Greaves’ name.
- However, the old web page that lists GEM as a general member is still live.
GEM requests SMEV to remove its name and any references to GEM from its communications
- GEM’s letter requests SMEV to remove any communication, reference, or association with GEM and GeM from its website and any other communications.
- The notice also asks SMEV to issue clarifications in two English newspapers to clear any misconceptions.
GEM clarifies its position
- In response to an email from CarandBike, GEM’s CEO and Executive Director, Sanjay Bahl, stated that GEM is not a part of SMEV and is committed to helping India become a global leader in electric vehicle development, engineering, and manufacturing.
- SMEV responded by stating that it is dealing with the issues related to subsidies and it does not affect the relationship between SMEV and individual brands.
Background on the subsidy issue
- SMEV is currently in a dispute with the central government over the subsidy reimbursement issue.
- Several brands, including Hero Electric, Okinawa Autotech, Revolt Motors, and Emo Mobility, who were part of the EV lobby, have been accused of manipulation and asked to refund the subsidies claimed under the FAME-II scheme.
- Ampere, the sub-brand under GEM, has also been asked to refund approximately INR 125 crore in subsidies claimed under the scheme.
- Revolt Motors recently issued a refund of INR 50.02 crore, but other players claim that they have done nothing wrong.
