Mahindra Announces Launch of 5-Door Thar in 2024
Mahindra and Mahindra have announced the launch of the 5-door Thar in India in the calendar year (CY) 2024. Despite reports claiming that the Mahindra Thar 5-door could be launched in the country in CY23, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sectors) of Mahindra, has clarified that the Thar 5-door will not be launched in CY23, but will enter the market in CY24.
New Mahindra Thar More Advanced Than Previous Models
The Mahindra Thar is currently sold in a 3-door form in India, launched in October 2020. The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny, set to launch in the first week of June, will be its main competitor. Initially introduced with a standard 4WD, Mahindra launched a RWD version of the popular off-roader earlier this year.
Improved Off-road Features in Mahindra Thar 5-Door
The Thar comes with three engine options ★a 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel (117bhp/300Nm), a 2.2-litre mHawk 130 CRDe diesel (130bhp/300Nm), and a 2.0-litre mStallion 150 TGDi petrol (150bhp/320Nm). The 1.5-litre diesel engine could be paired with a 6-speed MT, while the 2.2-litre diesel and the 2.0-litre petrol have the options of a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. The SUV now has both 4WD and RWD options.
Dimensions and Ground Clearance of the Thar
Based on a ladder frame chassis, the Thar measures 3,985mm in length, 1,820mm in width, and 1,855mm in height. It has a 2,450mm long wheelbase and 226mm ground clearance. The Thar has an approach angle of 41.2 degrees, departure angle of 36 degrees, and ramp-over angle of 26.2 degrees. Depending on the variant, the SUV comes with either 16-inch or 18-inch wheels.
