Toyota Brings Back Hydrogen-Powered Hilux Pickup Truck in the UK
Japanese car manufacturer Toyota has brought back its hydrogen-powered Toyota Hilux pickup truck in the UK. The announcement for the launch of this truck was made almost 9 months ago. This truck was developed under the Advanced Propulsion Centre project, which is funded by the government. The unveiling of the truck took place at the factory of the company located in Derby, United Kingdom. The hydrogen-powered pickup is still in the prototype phase, so only 10 units will be produced for testing its performance, among other aspects.
Key Highlights:
- The Toyota Hilux FCEV features the same powertrain as the Toyota Mirai.
- It has three high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks, claiming a range of up to 590 km.
- The generated electricity is stored in a battery, which is located on the charging platform.
Several other companies were involved in the manufacturing of this hydrogen-powered Hilux. Ricardo was responsible for the fuel cell components in the truck chassis, while D2H Advanced Technologies performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Thatcham Research took charge of the FCEV training package maintenance and production. In the Indian market, the Hilux is equipped with a 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine. It generates a power of 201 hp and torque of 420 Nm in the manual variant, and 500 Nm of torque in the automatic variant.
In the national market, it is sold in two variants, namely STD and High. The STD variant comes with only a manual gearbox option, while the High variant is available with both manual and automatic gearboxes. Additionally, the low-range gearbox is available as a standard feature in all variants with 4X4.
