Air-condition Pose Heatstroke Risk
Living in air-conditioned spaces is beneficial as it acts as a barrier between external and internal temperatures that can be adjusted according to personal preference. However, it also poses risks. People who stay in AC environments may experience heat discomfort when stepping out into the scorching heat, leading to a potential risk of heatstroke. If exposed to the sun for an extended period without sweating, the danger of heatstroke increases significantly.
Effects of Extreme Heat on the Body
Dr. M Vali, a senior consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, explains that extreme heat can be deadly. Heatstroke is a risk for everyone in hot weather, but those accustomed to AC may find it challenging to adjust to the intense heat outside. The body of such individuals cannot tolerate extreme heat, leading to rapid onset of heatstroke when transitioning from the AC to the scorching heat outdoors.
Precautions for AC Users
Dr. Vali recommends keeping the AC temperature above 25 degrees and practicing spending some time without AC before going outside. It is advised to drink plenty of water and consume water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber during hot weather. Wearing loose, cotton clothes, staying hydrated, and avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat are essential precautions for individuals living in AC environments to prevent heat-related illnesses like heatstroke and kidney failure.
