Scientists at Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKEU) in Patna have achieved a major milestone by developing a unique water filtration system using eggshells. This nano-technology based filter has recently received a patent from the Government of India. The innovation is designed to provide clean drinking water in areas where contamination is a serious health risk, particularly across rural and urban Bihar. The research was conducted by a specialized team at the School of Nano-Science and Nano-Technology.

How Eggshell Filter Solves Water Problems

The technology uses calcium oxide derived from discarded eggshells to purify water. It effectively removes hazardous elements like arsenic, fluoride, and lead which are commonly found in Bihar groundwater. Unlike expensive RO systems, this filter is highly affordable and does not require electricity to operate. It follows a Waste to Wealth model by turning garbage into a useful resource for the common man. The system also uses natural herbal solutions to keep the process eco-friendly and reduce carbon emissions.

Key Features and Research Team

The development was led by a dedicated team of researchers who focused on making the technology accessible to the general public. University officials plan to link this project with government schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission to scale up production. The following table summarizes the key details of this technological achievement:

Institution Aryabhatta Knowledge University (AKEU)
Patent Status Granted by Government of India
Lead Researchers Prof. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Abhay Kumar Aman
Target Pollutants Arsenic, Fluoride, and Lead
Operation Type Manual (No electricity needed)

Recognition from University Administration

Vice Chancellor Sharad Kumar Yadav expressed pride in this achievement and stated that it is a significant step for the state of Bihar. The filter is easy to maintain and costs much less than current market alternatives. Researchers emphasize that this system can help prevent serious diseases like cancer that are often caused by drinking contaminated water. The university administration is now preparing to bring this technology to the market for large scale use.
