Commuters traveling between Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will soon see a major infrastructure upgrade. The central government has given the green signal for a new four-lane bridge over the Ganga river. This bridge will connect Ara, Ballia, and Chhapra. The total budget for this project has been finalized at ₹1,200 crore, doubling the earlier estimate after the design was upgraded to four lanes.

What is the route and benefit?

The new bridge will be built at Mahuli Ghat in Ara and will connect to Karan Chhapra in Ballia. This project creates a strategic link between NH-31 in Uttar Pradesh and NH-922 in Bihar. Currently, people rely on seasonal pontoon bridges or take long detours during the rainy season. This new concrete structure will provide connectivity throughout the year.

  • It will reduce travel time between Ballia and Ara to approximately one hour.
  • The route passes through villages like Khawaspur, Dhaturi Tola, and Laxman Chhapra.
  • It connects Mahuli Ganga Ghat directly to the Patna-Buxar four-lane highway.

When will construction begin?

The Expert Committee of Secretaries has cleared the project proposal following approval from the Union Ministry. According to the latest updates from officials, the tender process is scheduled to begin in June 2026. Actual construction work is expected to start later within the year 2026. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari prioritized this project to ensure better traffic management between the two states.
