Introduction

In Banka district of Bihar, the cultivation of paddy usually begins in the months of June and July. However, there is a farmer in Banka who is venturing into the cultivation of summer paddy for the first time. Chandrashekhar Panjiyar, a resident of Chutiya in Banka district, got the idea of summer paddy cultivation after visiting Bengal, where farmers grow paddy every season. Inspired by this, he purchased Sorna variety paddy seeds at ₹100 per kg in December and started preparing the nursery for paddy cultivation.

Irrigation and Pest Management

Paddy cultivation requires proper irrigation, with one day of leaving the field dry followed by watering on the next day. The short duration of the summer paddy crop results in quick production but also makes it susceptible to diseases. Regular monitoring and pest management are essential to protect the crops. The summer paddy crop lasts for about 90 days and offers higher profits compared to traditional crops.

Sowing and Harvesting

The best time for sowing summer paddy is considered to be from mid-January to mid-February, with late February to early March also suitable for sowing. Early sowing can lead to an early harvest, with cutting possible in the month of August. Farmers need to prepare the seeds for summer paddy cultivation, which takes less time compared to other paddy varieties. Once the seeds are ready, they are sown in prepared fields, with plants spaced at a distance of 15 cm. Farmers find that cultivating summer paddy allows them to earn a good income in a short period, as they can harvest two crops between the Rabi and Kharif seasons. This has led to a growing interest in summer paddy cultivation among farmers in neighboring districts as well.
