Neeraj Kumar/ Begusarai: In the era of modernity, the experiments in the field of agriculture are opening the doors of prosperity for farmers. Many farmers in Begusarai have abandoned traditional farming and turned to cash crops. In this series, women in Begusarai are also making their mark through farming and agriculture. Today, we are going to talk about a progressive woman farmer who is revolutionizing farming.
This woman is none other than Meena Devi, whose name is included in the forefront of banana producers. However, she regrets not being able to benefit from the horticulture scheme due to lack of information. Nevertheless, Meena Devi did not give up and started farming without any help.
At the age of 55, Meena Devi started banana farming in Gadhpura block, 33 kilometers away from the district headquarters. For her, the saying “necessity is the mother of invention” holds true. We say this because when she needed bananas, she couldn’t find any.
During the festival season, even after placing orders, shopkeepers refused to provide bananas. After this, she made up her mind to start banana farming on her own. She took a loan from moneylenders and brought G-9 variety banana tissue culture from Bhagalpur. She has been cultivating bananas for the past 4 years on three acres of land.
Earning up to 4 lakhs from three acres, 55-year-old Meena Devi personally takes care of the banana farming. She cuts the banana stems with a sickle and harvests them from the field. Her entire day is spent in this work. For festivals and celebrations, where bananas are needed, she provides them from her garden at affordable prices. She considers this work as a social service. Meena Devi also earns up to 4 lakhs from banana farming.
If she had received the benefits of the horticulture scheme, she could have earned up to 5 lakhs, but she is not aware of the scheme. However, the district horticulture department claims that district horticulture officials have been appointed in each block to assist these farmers. Now it remains to be seen how these farmers can avail the benefits of the scheme and what actions can be taken against the Gadhpura block horticulture officer.
