Bihar consumers have received significant relief as the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) has rejected the proposal to increase electricity rates by 35 paise per unit. The commission turned down the hike requested by North Bihar Power Distribution Company and South Bihar Power Distribution Company. The new rates will be effective from April 1, 2026, and will remain in force until March 31, 2027. This decision ensures that there will be no extra burden on the common man for the upcoming financial year.

What are the other major relief measures announced?
Apart from the unit rate reduction, the commission has introduced several other benefits for consumers and farmers. Mushroom cultivation will now be considered under the agricultural category, allowing farmers to pay lower rates. The fixed charges for small industries in category one have been reduced from 288 rupees to 278 rupees per KVA. Additionally, urban domestic consumers will get a rebate of 200 rupees on 0.5 kW loads and 150 rupees on new connections. The merger of tariff slabs for urban domestic and commercial users is expected to benefit nearly 27 lakh people across the state.
