The Bihar government has decided to take strict action to improve healthcare in the state. On January 28, a formal order was issued to set up a six-member committee to plan the ban on private practice for government doctors. The Health Department has also started ‘Dhava Dal’ teams to conduct surprise raids in districts to stop doctors from working privately during duty hours.

Why is the Government Banning Private Practice?

This move is part of the ‘Saat Nishchay-3’ scheme to make health services better for everyone. The new committee, led by Dr. Rekha Jha, will look at how to apply this ban without hurting medical services. The special raid teams will catch doctors or staff who are part of referral syndicates or those who leave their duty to work in private clinics. The administration has warned that anyone found breaking these rules will face legal action.

What Incentives Will Doctors Receive?

The government understands that banning private practice might affect the income of doctors. To solve this, they are looking at the AIIMS model to keep doctors happy and motivated.

  • Extra Pay: A Non-Practicing Allowance (NPA) of around 20% of basic salary is proposed for doctors.
  • Better Facilities: Doctors will get priority in promotions and better government housing.
  • Rural Benefits: Special packages and higher incentives are planned for doctors serving in far-off villages to ensure they stay available.
