Bihar Government Mandates Vehicle Location Tracking Devices to Enhance Road Safety and Protect Public Interest

The Bihar government is taking strong action to improve road safety in the state. Transport Minister Shravan Kumar announced that all commercial vehicles must soon install a Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD). This move aims to reduce chaos and ensure that laws are followed on the roads.

During a recent meeting with officials, it was revealed that only 30 to 40 percent of public passenger vehicles currently have tracking systems and emergency buttons. This is surprising since these devices have been required in vehicles made after January 1, 2019. The performance of the agencies responsible for this work has not been satisfactory.

From now on, even older public vehicles will need to get the tracking system installed when they renew their registration, insurance, or fitness tests. For vehicles that operate under national permits, having a tracking system is already a legal requirement. The Minister warned that ignoring these rules will not be accepted anymore.

The Minister highlighted that the absence of tracking systems is leading to road issues like speeding and accidents. Heavy vehicles are also damaging rural roads, causing problems for the public. These changes aim to protect everyone on the road.

The government views the VLTD as more than just a gadget; it’s a way to safeguard women and children. It provides real-time location and speed information, along with emergency support from control rooms. Officials have been instructed to strictly enforce compliance with this new mandate.
