In light of the rising concerns over the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) spreading in China, the Bihar government has taken proactive measures to prevent and control its potential outbreak. On Monday, the State Health Department issued guidelines to all districts, urging them to prepare COVID-19-like protocols to tackle the virus effectively.
About HMPV Virus
The HMPV virus primarily affects the respiratory system, causing severe breathing issues. Currently, there is no specific vaccine or medication available for HMPV. Treatment focuses on:
- Hydration: Drinking plenty of water
- Rest: Adequate sleep and relaxation
- Symptomatic Treatment: Medications for fever, pain, and breathing difficulty
- Oxygen Support: In severe cases
Monitoring Flu-like Symptoms
Health Secretary Sanjay Singh has directed all healthcare centers to:
- Monitor cases with flu-like symptoms and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI).
- Submit daily reports to the IHIP portal.
- Ensure adequate availability of COVID-19 medicines, kits, ventilators, oxygen supplies, and masks.
- Set up Flu Corners in hospitals if cases rise significantly.
- Send samples of severe cases to the National Laboratory in Pune for HMPV confirmation.
Symptoms of HMPV Virus
The virus presents flu-like symptoms, including:
- Cough
- Fever
- Runny Nose
- Breathing Difficulties
- Severe Cases: Bronchitis and Pneumonia
Transmission Mode:
- Through coughing and sneezing
- Direct contact with infected individuals
- Touching contaminated surfaces
Early detection and treatment are critical. People showing symptoms should immediately consult a doctor.
Preventive Measures Similar to COVID-19
Authorities emphasize COVID-19-like preventive protocols to curb the spread of HMPV:
- Hand Hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and water.
- Avoid Face Touching: Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with dirty hands.
- Social Distancing: Maintain distance from infected individuals.
- Use Masks: Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing.
- Disinfect Surfaces: Clean frequently touched surfaces regularly.
- Self-Isolation: Infected individuals should isolate themselves at home.
- Protect Vulnerable Groups: Special care for children, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
