Main Points of the Bihar Crime Control Bill 2024

The Bihar government is set to introduce the Crime Control Bill in the state legislature, aimed at empowering officials from district magistrates to police inspectors. The bill will give DMs the authority to expel criminals from the state and grant inspectors the power to search for gangsters. Additionally, private CCTV footage must be stored securely for 30 days under the new law. The government is confident in passing the bill smoothly due to its majority in the assembly.

Empowering District Magistrates in Bihar

The new law will crack down on criminals involved in various illegal activities such as land grabbing, human trafficking, harassment, and misuse of social media. District magistrates will have the authority to take direct action against these offenders and issue warrants that will be valid across Bihar and the entire country. This move aims to give unlimited power to district magistrates for search and seizure operations.

Arresting Suspects Without Warrants

Under the Bihar Crime Control Bill 2024, district magistrates will be able to issue warrants, arrest individuals, and send them to jail or grant bail for up to six months. District magistrates will also have the right to punish any suspect without a warrant for a period of three months. Bihar police will now be able to arrest any suspicious individual without a warrant and present them before the executive magistrate for further action, with a maximum detention period of three months. Written notification must be provided to the district magistrate regarding these actions.
