This article shares details about Bihar’s road accident compensation scheme and the steps taken to support victims.
Bihar is leading the country in providing compensation to victims of road accidents. The government has set up a scheme where those seriously injured can receive ₹50,000, while families of those who lose their lives can get ₹2 lakh. Recently, a press conference was held where this information was shared.
In total, around 9,080 hit-and-run cases have been submitted for approval to the General Insurance Council (GIC). So far, 5,830 of these cases have been compensated. This effort shows Bihar’s commitment to supporting accident victims and their families.
Over the past one and a half years, ₹84.19 crore has been paid out in compensation for 1,626 cases. To ensure quicker resolutions, Motor Accident Claim Tribunals (MACT) have been established in ten districts, including Patna and Gaya. The aim is to settle these cases within 6 to 12 months.
The authorities want the public to be aware of how the compensation system works. There are two types of road accidents: those where the driver is identified and hit-and-run cases. The police are responsible for providing necessary forms to the victims or their families to initiate the compensation process.
Additionally, there are rules in place to file charge sheets within 90 days, which is known as a detailed action report. The average rate of hit-and-run cases in Bihar is about 25%, which is in line with the national average.
