In Bihar politics, a significant stir has emerged regarding the selection of the next Chief Minister following Nitish Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha. The Janata Dal (United) (JDU) has presented certain conditions to its alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), making it clear that it will not accept a “surprising strategy” akin to those seen in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where less prominent leaders were appointed as CMs.

Speculations are rife that Nitish Kumar might resign from his Chief Ministerial post around April 13, with a new government potentially forming by April 15. This situation has led to intense discussions and negotiations between the two major coalition partners.

JDU’s Firm Conditions for the Next Chief Minister

The JDU has drawn a “Laxman Rekha” (a red line), emphasizing that it will not risk its political ground or social equations for any unexpected decision. The party specifically rejects the BJP’s strategy of appointing a relatively unknown face as CM, as was done in states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. JDU insists that the next Chief Minister must be someone preferred by Nitish Kumar, a leader who can carry forward his legacy and maintain the existing political and social alliances.

Furthermore, the JDU seeks no alteration in the social structure of the government. This stance underscores the party’s commitment to protecting its traditional voter base and ensuring stability within the coalition.

Key Players and Potential Candidates in the Succession Race

The political landscape is buzzing with several names as potential successors. From the BJP, names like Samrat Chaudhary, Vijay Sinha, Nityanand Rai, and Dilip Jaiswal are currently in discussion. If Nitish Kumar’s preference is considered, Vijay Chaudhary, often regarded as his “Number 2,” could emerge as a strong candidate from JDU. Interestingly, Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, is also playing an active role in state politics, with strongman MLA Anant Singh endorsing him as his top choice for the next CM, indicating a desire for a leader who earns the trust of key figures.

The JDU also stresses the importance of taking other NDA allies into confidence, including the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), and Rashtriya Lok Morcha, in the decision-making process for the new leadership. Should JDU take on the role of a junior partner in the coalition, it might demand a review of the current cabinet sharing formula and seek the position of the Assembly Speaker.

Amidst these developments, JDU leaders maintain that Nitish Kumar’s move to the Rajya Sabha will not weaken the party; instead, it will allow him more time to focus on Bihar’s politics. BJP state president Sanjay Sarawagi has hinted that Nitish Kumar himself might select the next Chief Minister, while JDU state president Umesh Kushwaha stated that the question of a new CM does not arise as Nitish Kumar has not yet resigned.
