The Bihar government has launched a massive drive to clean up the Public Distribution System (PDS) list across the state. After a thorough verification process, the Food and Consumer Protection Department has identified over 33 lakh ration cardholders who are not eligible for the scheme. The administration has already started the process to remove these names from the official portal. This move aims to ensure that the subsidized grains reach the actual poor families who really need support.

Why are these names being removed?
The department found that many people holding ration cards do not meet the poverty criteria set by the government. The investigation revealed that individuals who own four-wheeler vehicles or pay income tax were also taking benefits. Additionally, people who have not collected their ration for a long time are being marked as ineligible. The government has made it clear that strict action will be taken against those who are wrongly using the scheme, and market rates might be recovered from them.
Which districts are affected the most?
The digital verification process has shown significant numbers of fake cardholders in major districts. Gaya has the highest number of ineligible beneficiaries with 1.92 lakh names set to be removed. Patna follows closely with 1.83 lakh names. Other districts like Siwan, Bhagalpur, and Champaran also have over one lakh such names each. However, the government has assured that genuine families need not worry, and new cards are being issued to eligible people simultaneously.
