Residents of Bihar, especially in Patna and Bhagalpur, are experiencing unusual heat this February. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has shared worrying data, indicating that 2026 could be one of the hottest years in recent history. Temperatures in districts like Kaimur and Katihar have already crossed 32°C, and the comfortable spring weather is rapidly disappearing. Weather experts have warned that the need for cooling appliances will be felt much earlier than usual this year due to rising temperatures.

When will you need the AC and Cooler?

Weather experts predict that by the last week of February, temperatures across the state could touch 33°C to 35°C. This means that people will likely need Air Conditioners (AC) or coolers during the afternoon hours very soon. The return of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean is cited as a major reason for this early and intense heat. The IMD expects heatwave conditions to start right from the first week of March, with April and May being particularly severe. The department has also warned of ‘Warm Nights,’ meaning night temperatures will remain higher than normal.

South Bihar in Hot Zone and Public Advisory

The Bihar Meteorological Service Centre (BMSK) has specifically identified South Bihar districts like Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Munger as a “Hot Zone.” Authorities are urging caution as the mercury continues to rise.

  • Current Status: Maximum temperatures in Patna and Bhagalpur are currently running 2-3 degrees above normal levels.
  • No Relief: Western Disturbances active around mid-February will only bring partial clouds but no rain, keeping the weather dry.
  • Safety Advisory: Officials advise people to avoid going out between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM unless necessary and to increase fluid intake like ORS and lemon water.
  • Schools: School timings are expected to shift to morning shifts by mid-March to protect children from the heat.
