The construction of the Chandpur-Gabhirar bridge, which connects Bihar and Uttar Pradesh over the Saryu river, is set to take a new turn. Initially designed with 28 pillars, the bridge’s design had to be changed due to ongoing erosion, floods, and shifting river currents. A survey revealed that an additional 24 pillars are now needed, bringing the total to 47 pillars to ensure the bridge’s strength and safety.
This upgrade means that once the bridge is completed, the travel distance from Siwan to UP will be reduced by about 100 kilometers. This is expected to significantly improve connectivity for people in the region, making it easier for them to access major cities in UP like Ballia, Varanasi, and Azamgarh.
The project faced many delays since the foundation stone was laid in 2016. It was initially expected to finish by June 2024, but problems caused by the river have prolonged the work. Now, there is a proposal to extend the bridge’s length from 1275 meters to 2550 meters. Once the government approves this proposal, construction is expected to speed up.
With the new changes, the cost of the project has also increased significantly. The budget has gone from Rs 198 crore to nearly Rs 512 crore, which includes an extra Rs 100 crore for a guide dam and road widening. The design for the guide dam is being prepared by a team from BHU-IIT, and funds for the connecting road from Bihar have already been released.
Despite the challenges, the future looks hopeful for this bridge project. Once completed, it will not just be a bridge but a vital link that enhances the connectivity between Bihar and UP, benefiting many people in the region.
