Bihar’s Madhubani District to Benefit from Rs 7832 Crore Western Kosi Canal Expansion Project, Boosting Agriculture and Irrigation

Recently, Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited Madhubani district to kick off a big project for the Western Kosi Canal. This project aims to expand, renew, and modernize the canal system, with a budget of over Rs 7,800 crore. It is expected to bring significant improvements to farming in the Mithila-Darbhanga and Madhubani districts.

The main goal of this project is to ensure that farmers have enough water for their crops throughout the year, just like in Punjab and Haryana. With this new system, farmers will benefit during both the Rabi and Kharif seasons. Additionally, it will help reduce flooding from the Kosi river, improving the lives of many farming families in the area.

As a result of this initiative, farmers can expect consistent water supply, leading to increased agricultural productivity. The plan includes lining and improving around 741 km of canals, which will allow for better irrigation. This will help more than 2,91,000 hectares of farmland, increasing the irrigation intensity significantly.

The project also includes building roads along the canal, constructing new bridges, and repairing old ones. This will make it easier for people to travel in rural areas. Various structures like regulators and drainage systems will be built or repaired to manage floodwaters and ensure proper irrigation.

Moving forward, this project is set to transform agriculture in the Mithila region over the next two to three years. With better irrigation and infrastructure, the local economy is expected to strengthen, reducing the need for people to migrate for work.
