Early Life and Entry into Politics
Jitan Ram Manjhi was born in 1944 in the Mahkar region of the Gaya district. His father, Ramjeet Manjhi, used to work as a laborer in a prosperous farmer’s house in the village. Due to financial constraints, Jitan Ram Manjhi had to take up a job in the telecommunications department after completing his graduation. Despite being drawn towards politics, he had to secure a government job in the telecommunications department due to the family’s financial situation.
Political Career and Achievements
Jitan Ram Manjhi left his job in the telecommunications department to enter politics. He contested elections on a Congress ticket for the first time in 1976 but was unsuccessful. In 1980, he was given a ticket to contest elections from the Fatehpur assembly constituency by the Congress. Since then, he has been a continuous member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. He formed his own party, the Hindustani Awam Morcha, in 2015 and has contested several elections, finally winning a seat in the Lok Sabha in 2024.
