Jharkhand is experiencing cold weather due to the cold Himalayan winds blowing from the north-west direction. The temperature in various cities of the state has dropped below the normal range, with all cities recording temperatures around 9.0 degrees Celsius or lower. The arrival of chilly winds in Jharkhand is expected to continue for the next three days, and the cold spell may intensify. However, weather conditions are likely to change after January 16, with the possibility of clouds covering the sky and light rain in the state on January 17.

During the past 24 hours, the lowest temperature was recorded in Macluskieganj at 3.5 degrees Celsius. Kanke witnessed a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius, indicating a cold wave situation in the western and northern parts of the state. Gumla recorded a minimum temperature of 3.8 degrees Celsius, while Chatra recorded 4.1 degrees Celsius, Garhwa recorded 5.4 degrees Celsius, Khunti recorded 4.4 degrees Celsius, Latehar recorded 4.9 degrees Celsius, and Lohardaga recorded a minimum temperature of 5.2 degrees Celsius. Other cities, including Jamshedpur, also experienced temperatures close to 9.0 degrees Celsius.

Ranchi recorded a minimum temperature of 8.1 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees below normal. The temperature in Santal Pargana and North Chotanagpur Mandal districts also remained around 9.0 degrees Celsius or lower. Hazaribagh recorded 8.1 degrees Celsius, Dhanbad recorded 6.3 degrees Celsius, and Pakur recorded a minimum temperature of 6.8 degrees Celsius.

According to the Meteorological Department, a western disturbance is expected to affect the north-western parts of the country after January 16. As a result, clouds will cover the sky from the night of January 16, and there is a possibility of light or scattered rain in various parts of the state, including the capital city, on January 17. This change in weather will affect the direction of chilly winds and increase the minimum temperatures. It will also result in reduced fog during the night.

There is less likelihood of relief from the cold weather in Jharkhand for the next three days. The temperature has dropped by four to eight degrees Celsius. ★Abhishek Anand, Meteorological Department, Ranchi.
