Bridge worth 31 crores collapses in Bihar
A bridge worth 31 crores collapsed in Araria, Bihar, that was being constructed to connect Kursakanta and Sikti blocks. The pillars of the bridge gave way suddenly, causing the collapse. The construction of the bridge was being supervised by the Rural Engineering Organization (REO) department.
Construction history and challenges
The construction of the bridge started in 2011 under the Bihar Bridge Corporation. Due to a change in the course of the Bakra river in 2019, the REO took over the construction. The changing river course and technical flaws led to the collapse of the bridge, which was divided into three parts, two of which were destroyed.
Impact on the local community
The collapse of the bridge has severely affected the local community, as they now have to travel an additional 15-20 kilometers to reach their destinations. The construction of the bridge aimed to benefit villages in Sikti and Kursakanta blocks, but due to the collapse, the project has been delayed.
Investigation and accountability
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the collapse. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the collapse, as per the District Magistrate’s statement. The collapse has raised concerns about the quality of infrastructure projects in Bihar.
