Heatwave in Bihar last year, Coldwave this year

Last year, Bihar, including the capital Patna, experienced a heatwave during the summers. However, this year, the state is facing a coldwave during the winters. Thick fog and freezing temperatures have been prevailing for the past six days. The coldwave is expected to continue in the coming days as well.

Coldwave caused by dense fog and low visibility

The coldwave in Bihar is caused by dense fog that has formed a strong layer above the surface, extending up to two kilometers. The fog also contains dust particles, preventing sunlight from reaching the ground. As a result, temperatures have dropped significantly in most parts of the state. Normally, December to January witnesses active western disturbances resulting in winter rains and clear skies. However, this year, the situation is different, with continuous coldwave conditions since 2018.

Possibility of rain around 26-27 January

According to weather reports, a powerful western disturbance is expected to form around 26th January, which could lead to rainfall in Bihar on 26th or 27th January. This is likely to further intensify the cold conditions. IMD predicts that the coldwave may continue until 22nd January. Dense fog is expected in northern Bihar, while moderate to dense fog is likely in southern Bihar for the next three to four days.

Maximum cold recorded in Patna, Chapra, Bhagalpur

The temperatures in these areas were recorded six to eleven degrees Celsius below normal. Bhagalpur recorded a maximum of 15.2 degrees Celsius, seven degrees below normal, and Purnia recorded a maximum of 14.2 degrees Celsius, ten degrees below normal.
