Cyber Criminals Thug People by Trapping ATM Cards
In Ranchi, cyber criminals are now using a new modus operandi to scam people by trapping their ATM cards in ATM machines. A recent case in Dumardaga area of Sadar Thana involved the Indian Overseas Bank’s ATM.
How the Scam Works
The cyber criminal reached the Indian Overseas Bank’s ATM, removed the card reader, and replaced it with their own mobile number instead of the engineer’s contact number. On June 3, two individuals visited the ATM at different intervals to withdraw money.
Modus Operandi
Once the first person inserted the card into the ATM, it got stuck. The person then contacted the number written by the scammer, who asked for the password and instructed the victim to go to the bank branch to retrieve the card. After the call ended, the victim went to the bank, while the scammer went back to the ATM, removed the card, and withdrew money using the password provided.
Police Investigation
Similar incidents occurred with another person, leading to the bank branch manager filing a case. The cyber criminals broke the ATM lock, removed the reader when the card got stuck, and contacted the engineer. By doing so, they managed to scam people of around Rs 42,000. The bank branch manager has lodged a complaint at the police station, and an investigation is underway.
