A camp was organized in Daudnagar block of Aurangabad, Bihar, to provide free agricultural electricity connections to local farmers. However, the event suffered from poor management as there were no banners or official notices to explain the purpose of the gathering. Farmers who arrived at the spot had to ask each other for details because the concerned officers were not present at the venue to guide them.
What is the Mukhyamantri Krishi Vidyut Sambandh Yojana?
The camp was organized under the ‘Mukhyamantri Krishi Vidyut Sambandh Yojana’ which aims to reduce irrigation costs for farmers. Under this scheme, the state government provides free electricity connections directly to the fields. The government bears the entire cost of infrastructure including electric poles, wires, and transformers.
Once the connection is active, farmers receive electricity at a highly subsidized rate of just 55 paise per unit for irrigation purposes. The government has set a target to provide these connections to 8 lakh 40 thousand farmers across the state by September 2026. So far, more than 5 lakh 42 thousand connections have been distributed.
How can farmers apply for this connection?
Despite the issues at the camp, farmers can still apply for this scheme using digital methods. Interested candidates can apply from their homes using the ‘Suvidha’ mobile application. The process does not require visiting government offices if the online portal is working correctly.
To complete the application, farmers need to submit specific documents. These include a valid Aadhaar card, updated land revenue receipts, and a photograph of the boring or pump set. While the government aims to speed up the process, local reports indicate that lack of updated land documents and slow server speeds often delay the registration process.
