Dengue Fever Causes
A recent Indian research study has revealed that mosquitoes carrying dengue fever tend to bite boys more than girls. This raises questions about how to identify whether a mosquito should be avoided based on the gender of the person it is biting. However, it is important to note that there is no biological difference between boys and girls that affects mosquito bites, yet the risk of dengue fever is higher in boys aged 8 to 11 years compared to girls.
Research Findings
According to a study conducted in Southern Odisha, India by the National Institute of Health, boys are more likely to be exposed to Aedes mosquitoes, carriers of the dengue virus, compared to girls. The research observed an infection ratio of 3.4:1 between boys and girls in children randomly included in the study. The highest likelihood of dengue infection was found among boys aged 8 to 11 years.
Expert Opinion
Dr. Satpal, a retired nodal officer for vector-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya in Delhi, explains that the higher exposure of boys to mosquitoes in open environments such as parks and school grounds contributes to their increased risk of dengue fever. Girls, on the other hand, tend to stay indoors more often, reducing their exposure to mosquitoes. Additionally, differences in clothing choices between boys and girls, with girls wearing more covered clothing, also play a role in reducing mosquito exposure.
