Election Commission Announcement
The Election Commission has announced the by-elections for the Rajya Sabha. According to the notification issued by the Election Commission, nominations will begin from August 14th. Candidates can file their nominations until August 21st, and the last date for withdrawal of names is August 27th. If voting is required, it will take place on September 3rd. The by-elections include two seats from Bihar, left vacant after the Lok Sabha victories of RJD leader Misa Bharti and BJP’s Vivek Thakur.
Term Duration
As per the information provided by the Election Commission, Misa Bharti’s term was until July 7, 2028, while Vivek Thakur’s term was until April 9, 2026. The winner of the by-election will serve the remaining term of the respective seat. BJP has announced Upendra Kushwaha as their candidate for one of the seats in the by-election. If Kushwaha wins, he is set to become a Member of Parliament for the National Lok Morcha.
Seat Allocation
While one seat was reserved for RJD and the other for BJP, the decision on the second seat is still pending. If Upendra Kushwaha wins from the RJD seat, BJP would want to retain the second seat. However, a final decision on this matter has not been reached yet. Upendra Kushwaha faced defeat in the Karakat constituency due to Pawan Singh’s rebellion against BJP, leading to his candidacy in the by-election for the Rajya Sabha.
Kushwaha’s Influence
Despite challenges from various leaders, Upendra Kushwaha remains a prominent figure in Bihar. He is recognized as a caste leader, with the Kushwaha community comprising approximately 4.2% of Bihar’s population. While he may not have won seats in the past, Kushwaha has been successful in influencing the political landscape of Bihar.
