Fire Safety Neglected at SKMCH
The SKMCH Fire Department has not paid attention to fire prevention despite two notices. For almost two years, the department has been demanding land to install a fire unit, which has not been fulfilled. With increasing incidents of fire outbreaks, the need for prevention is evident.
Inadequate Fire Fighting System
The high-cost hydrant system installed at SKMCH is proving to be ineffective. The District Fire Department has issued two notices to rectify the system, but no improvements have been made yet. Inspections have revealed the fixed fire fighting system is inactive, with no jockey pump for pressure maintenance.
Inspections and Failures
Last year, during a mock drill on April 13, the hydrant system failed. Inspections by district fire officials found the fixed fire fighting system to be non-operational, with inadequate electric pump power and inactive sprinklers. Regular rifling checks are also not conducted at SKMCH, highlighting the negligence towards fire safety.
Need for Fire Safety Officer
SKMCH has been urged to appoint a fire safety officer for several years, but the seriousness of the matter has not been acknowledged. With such a large hospital, having a fire safety officer would ensure regular fire audits and necessary precautions are in place. Other organizations have their fire safety officers, emphasizing the importance of fire safety measures.
