Impact of Kosi River on Gobargha Village

The Gobargha village in Madhepur block is located about 65 kilometers away from the district headquarters of Madhubani. The village is situated on the banks of the Kosi River, which has changed its course over the years. Due to the changing course of the river, erosion has been occurring rapidly in the village, leading to the destruction of homes and displacement of families.

Rapid Erosion and Displacement

After several incidents of flooding and erosion, the pace of erosion in Gobargha village has increased significantly. Land along the riverbank is being washed away, forcing residents to abandon their homes and seek shelter in safer areas. The homes of 30 to 40 families in Gobargha, Mainahi, and Pariyahi villages have been destroyed, and many families have been displaced within a week.

Lack of Government Assistance

The affected families claim that no government representative or official has reached out to provide assistance so far. They are facing food and water shortages and are compelled to abandon their homes to avoid being swept away by the river. Since 2008, this area has been vulnerable to erosion, but the government has not provided any means of transportation for the residents.

Political Representation and Development

Despite having two ministers from this area in the Bihar government, including the Energy Minister, development and assistance seem distant for the common people. Sheila Mandal represents this assembly constituency, while the Energy Minister’s residence is also located at the confluence of the Kosi River. However, the lack of basic amenities and government support has left the residents struggling to cope with the ongoing erosion crisis.
