Farmer Ashok Prasad: Cultivating Foreign Vegetables in Gaya
Ashok Prasad, a farmer from Bakraur village in the Bodh Gaya block area of Gaya, has been cultivating foreign vegetables for the past seven years. He grows broccoli, lettuce, Thai leek, Chinese banda, celery leaves, lemongrass, red and yellow capsicum, all of which have high demand. Ashok plants some foreign vegetables in his fields throughout the year, and most of them are sought after by foreign tourists who use them for salads or soups.
Profitable Venture: Foreign Vegetable Farming in Gaya
Ashok Prasad noticed a significant demand for foreign vegetables in Bodh Gaya, despite the large number of foreign tourists visiting the area. Realizing the potential, he started cultivating foreign vegetables seven years ago. Today, he is known as a successful farmer, earning good profits and achieving financial stability. Ashok cultivates foreign vegetables in 15-20 kata (approximately 0.5-0.7 acres) of land and saves around Rs 10,000 per kata each season.
High Demand in Bodh Gaya Market and Hotels
Foreign tourists primarily drive the demand for foreign vegetables in the markets and hotels of Bodh Gaya. These vegetables fetch good prices, such as Rs 25-30 per piece for broccoli, Rs 50-60 per piece for Chinese banda, Rs 30-40 per kilogram for lettuce, and Rs 50 per kilogram for Thai leek. Most foreign tourists consume these vegetables in salads and soups, and gradually, locals have also started incorporating them into their diets.
गया के बोधगया प्रखंड क्षेत्र के बकरौर गांव में रहने वाले किसान अशोक प्रसाद पिछले 7 साल से विदेशी सब्जी की खेती कर रहे हैं। इन सब्जियों में उनके पास ब्रोकली, पेचे, लेटयुस, थाई लीक, चाइनीज बंदा, सिलेरी पता, लेमनग्रास, रेड और येलो कैप्सिकम है। इनकी डिमांड ज्यादातर विदेशी पर्यटक करते हैं और इन्हें सलाद या सुप बनाने के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। किसान अशोक प्रसाद ने देखा कि बोधगया में विदेशी पर्यटकों की काफी संख्या होने के बावजूद कोई भी विदेशी सब्जी की खेती नहीं कर रहा है, इसलिए उन्होंने खुद ही इसे शुरू कर दिया। अब उनकी सफलता के बाद अन्य किसान भी विदेशी सब्जी की खेती करने की शुरुआत कर रहे हैं। अशोक प्रसाद की खेती से उन्हें सालाना 2 लाख रुपये की बचत हो रही है और बोधगया में विदेशी सब्जियों की अच्छी कीमत मिल रही है। इसके साथ ही, अशोक प्रसाद ने थाई प्याज की भी खेती शुरू की है और उन्हें अपने उत्पाद को पटना में दिखाने का मौका मिलेगा।
