HLA Camp for Thalassemia Patients in Patna
A free check-up camp was organized in Maharana Pratap Bhawan, Patna, for thalassemia patients from economically weaker sections of Bihar. In this camp, bone marrow transplants will also be conducted for the patients. The camp is being organized for the third time by the Mata Vaishno Devi Seva Samiti and Maan Blood Center Bihar, where children under the age of 12 with siblings who want to undergo a bone marrow transplant can get their tests done. If the HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) of the donor matches with the patient by 100%, the preparations for the bone marrow transplant will be made. So far, a total of 45 children have successfully undergone bone marrow transplants through the HLA matching camp.
Significance of HLA Testing in Thalassemia Patients
Mukesh Hisariya, the founder of Mata Vaishno Devi Seva Samiti, explained that HLA testing is crucial for thalassemia patients who want to undergo a bone marrow transplant. The German team of DKMS-BMST Foundation India and Narayana Health from Bangalore plays a significant role in this camp. The samples of the children are sent to Germany for HLA testing. After the test, it is determined how much percentage of the sample matches with the siblings. If the match is 100%, then the process of bone marrow transplant can proceed.
High Cost of Bone Marrow Transplant
Mukesh Hisariya mentioned that bone marrow transplant is an expensive procedure, making it difficult for economically weaker sections of society to afford it. Therefore, it is essential for everyone to come together and be a part of the campaign to save the lives of children affected by this disease. For families with an annual income of less than 250,000 rupees, Coal India Limited provides financial assistance of 1 million rupees, the central government provides 300,000 rupees, and the state government provides up to 500,000 rupees for bone marrow transplants. Thalassemia patients can contact Jaswant Kumar, Brajesh Kumar, or Sujit Gupta for free registration.
