Mohan Prakash, a farmer from Supaul, Bihar, is promoting the cultivation and sale of makhana, also known as fox nuts. Despite its numerous health benefits, makhana farming and sales have not been widely promoted. However, with ongoing research and the recent GI tag for Mithila makhana, the government has started encouraging farmers to expand its cultivation. This news is especially relevant for farmers who are considering growing makhana.
The government is providing a subsidy of 75% for makhana cultivation. Farmers can register online on the Agriculture Department’s website if they are interested in growing makhana. The cultivation of one hectare of makhana costs a total of INR 97,000, out of which the department is providing a subsidy of INR 72,750. The Deputy Director of Horticulture in the district, Amrita Kumari, has mentioned that the cultivation of high-quality makhana varieties is being promoted in the Kosi region. Therefore, there is great potential for makhana farming in the district, and the government is implementing the Makhana Expansion Scheme to promote its cultivation.
By participating in this scheme, farmers in the area can earn good profits from makhana cultivation. Approximately 2,000 hectares of land in the district are currently being used for makhana farming. The government is running three schemes to support makhana cultivation. The Seed Distribution Program provides farmers with makhana seeds at a subsidized rate of INR 5,400, with a 75% government subsidy. The Makhana Area Expansion Farming System Scheme provides farmers engaged in makhana cultivation with a 75% subsidy for the cost of cultivation. The government believes that makhana cultivation costs INR 97,000 per hectare, and farmers are being provided with a subsidy of INR 72,750. The Storage House Scheme offers a subsidy of 75% for farmers who want to build storage facilities for makhana. The estimated cost for constructing a storage house is INR 10 lakh.
