Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, is ready to file his statement with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the money laundering case. After receiving the eighth summons from the ED, Soren has given his consent to file a statement. It should be noted that after the issuance of the seventh summons by the ED, Soren had criticized the agency in a letter, declaring the summons to be completely illegal.
According to media reports, Jharkhand CM Soren revealed on Monday night that he received the eighth summons from the ED on Saturday. He stated that the letter sent by the ED asked him to be available for questioning between 16th and 20th January. He expressed his readiness to file his statement and mentioned that the ED can record his statement at their office on 20th January. Meanwhile, an official from the Chief Minister’s office confirmed that Soren will be available to file his statement at the ED office in Ranchi on 20th January.
Now let’s understand the matter at hand. Hemant Soren is facing allegations of money laundering. In Jharkhand, land mafias have illegally changed the ownership rights of land and seized the entire land. The ED is currently investigating the case. So far, 14 people have been arrested in connection with the case. This includes Chhavi Ranjan, an IAS officer from the 2011 batch, who has held positions as Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi.
Soren had accused the ED in his letter. After the issuance of the seventh summons by the Enforcement Directorate, Soren wrote a letter to the investigating agency. In the letter, Soren made several allegations against the ED. He stated that the summons issued to him is completely illegal. He had already provided a full account of his assets. He criticized the media trial of the case and accused the ED of trying to destabilize the Jharkhand government.
The summons has ignited political debates, with the Congress supporting Soren and the BJP opposing him. Bandhu Tirkey, the executive president of the Jharkhand Congress, stated that the targeting of an Adivasi CM by central agencies has angered the Adivasi community. On the other hand, after the issuance of the seventh summons by the ED, the BJP targeted Soren. Moreover, there have been speculations about changing the CM in Jharkhand. The BJP recently claimed that the current CM can make his wife the Chief Minister.
