Supreme Court Hearing on Hemant Soren’s Bail Plea

A few days ago, Hemant Soren was in police custody for his uncle’s Shraddh ceremony. The Supreme Court will hear Hemant Soren’s plea for interim bail today. During the last hearing on May 13, the court had asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to submit a response. Today, Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Deepankar Datta will hear Hemant Soren’s plea challenging the Jharkhand High Court’s order that upheld his arrest.

Allegations of Illegal Land Deals

In the Badgai region of Ranchi district, ED has taken action against former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren in a case involving illegal land transactions of around 7-8 acres. Hemant Soren has denied any ownership of the land in question and claims that no documents linking him to the land have been presented by the ED. This has raised doubts about the validity of his arrest in this matter.

PMLA Case Against Hemant Soren

Hemant Soren is facing a case of money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The case is based on alleged illegal land transactions in the Bajra area of Ranchi, where land was sold using fake documents. The ED initiated an investigation into this case, leading to multiple arrests, including that of suspended IAS officer Chhabi Ranjan.

Failure to Appear Before ED

Despite being summoned multiple times by the ED for questioning, Hemant Soren failed to appear before the authorities. As a result, he was arrested on January 31, 2024, under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code. The case against Hemant Soren continues to unfold as the legal proceedings progress.
