History of Kapileshwar Sthan Mahadev

The history of Kapileshwar Sthan Mahadev in Madhubani district is quite unique. It is said that during Lord Ram and Sita’s marriage procession in Janakpur, Kapil Muni rested at this place. At that time, Lord Shiva gave him a vision. In the vision, Kapil Muni was instructed to search for a Shivling. After some time, he saw a stream of cow’s milk flowing and realized the presence of the Shivling, starting his worship.

Story of Kapil Muni

According to Shrimad Bhagwat, Kapil Muni is considered as the 5th avatar of Vishnu among the 24 incarnations. He is also known as the avatar of Agni and the mind-born son of Brahma. Kapil Muni was born to Sage Kardam as a result of Vishnu’s severe penance on the banks of the Saraswati river. He is revered as a great sage, with his sisters mentioned in various scriptures.

Establishment of Shivling

The story of the establishment of the Shivling at Kapileshwar Sthan Mahadev is quite fascinating. It is believed that when Kapil Muni was on his way to Janakpur, he was captivated by the serene environment of the forest here. It was during this time that Lord Shiva instructed him to worship the Shivling in a dream. Devotees flock here every day, especially during the Shravan month and Shravan Mela, to offer prayers and seek success in their endeavors. The temple premises also house idols of various deities, with rituals performed by priests supported by the royal trust.
