Importance of Marriage Registration

Marriage is a sacred bond that not only unites two individuals but also creates a new relationship between two families in any society. In Hinduism, couples tie the knot considering fire as a witness, in the presence of family and relatives. However, did you know that marriage is not legally valid until it is registered? Registration of marriage is mandatory to make it legally valid under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 and the Special Marriage Act 1954.

Government Facilities and Marriage Certificate

Sanjay Singh from the registration office mentioned that for availing any government facility, having a marriage certificate is essential for married couples. The Supreme Court has also made it mandatory. The marriage certificate serves as an economic proof, making it legally valid for all marriages of every religion from both sides.

Registration Process and Guidelines

To get a marriage certificate, couples need to visit the marriage registrar and fill out a form with address proof, age certificate of the couple, Aadhar cards, two passport size photos, and a joint photo of the marriage. After applying, the marriage certificate is usually issued within 30 days.
