Increasing Soil Fertility with Green Manure

Farmers often forget to maintain the soil fertility of their fields in their quest to increase crop production capacity and start using chemical fertilizers more and more. While the use of chemical fertilizers does increase production capacity, it also causes significant harm to the soil’s fertility and can be detrimental to human health. Agricultural scientists are now conducting research to naturally increase soil fertility. According to agricultural scientists, using green manure as a fertilizer is a boon for farmers. Green manure as a crop helps increase the amount of organic matter in the soil, leading to improved crop production and sustained soil fertility.

Encouraging Green Manure Cultivation for Soil Health

Agricultural scientists recommend cultivating green manure to maintain soil fertility. This practice provides the soil with organic carbon, nitrogen, and other essential nutrients. Recently, there has been a decline in green manure cultivation. To promote green manure cultivation and maintain soil fertility, the Bihar government is providing subsidized seeds for farmers. Green manure cultivation, like using dhaincha as a green manure crop, can help increase productivity capacity.

Benefits of Dhaincha as Green Manure

Dhaincha is a green manure crop that is used to make green manure for fields. After ploughing dhaincha into the soil and planting rice, there is an increase in productivity capacity. Dhaincha provides 20 to 25 tons of green manure and 80 to 120 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare. The use of dhaincha helps stabilize nitrogen levels in the soil, contributing to increased crop production. Agriculturists advise farmers to mix dhaincha into the soil when the crop is 40 to 45 days old for optimal results. The period between harvesting Rabi crops and sowing Kharif crops is ideal for using green manure like dhaincha.
