Increasing Income through Groundnut Farming in Gaya District
Farming groundnuts is becoming a profitable venture for farmers in Gaya district of Bihar. This year, farmers in Manpur block have started groundnut cultivation in about 20 acres of land. After successful trials last year, more farmers have shown interest in groundnut cultivation, with around 40 to 50 farmers in the village getting involved. Groundnut cultivation begins in April and harvesting takes place in June and July, with a yield of 30 to 40 kilograms per acre.
Shift from Moong Cultivation to Groundnut Farming
Traditionally, farmers in Gaya district have been cultivating moong beans, but due to low savings, they have now shifted their focus towards groundnut farming. Groundnut cultivation requires less investment and labor, resulting in better profits for the farmers. The favorable climate and soil conditions in Gaya district make it ideal for groundnut cultivation, with agricultural centers providing guidance to the farmers.
Optimal Soil Conditions for Groundnut Cultivation
The farmers in villages like Nanaok and Sondhi are cultivating groundnuts in more than 20 acres of land this year, with expectations of earning up to Rs 3000 per acre. The sandy loam and loamy soil in the region are suitable for groundnut cultivation. Farmers have purchased seeds from local seed stores and have begun planting in April, with expectations of a good harvest by June.
