Indian Railways is increasing train fares from December 26, 2025, affecting long-distance travel.

Indian Railways has announced a new fare hike for train passengers, which will start from December 26, 2025. This change will mainly affect those traveling long distances, so it’s good to be aware of it ahead of time.

The fare increase will only apply to journeys longer than 215 kilometers. For non-AC trains, the fare will go up by 1 paise per kilometer, while for mail, express, and AC trains, it will increase by 2 paise per kilometer. This means a trip of 500 kilometers in a non-AC train will cost you an extra ₹10.

For example, if you travel 1000 kilometers, you’ll pay around ₹10 more in a non-AC train. In premium trains like Rajdhani Express and Vande Bharat, the fare could increase by about ₹20. If you’re traveling from Delhi to Patna, which is around 1000 kilometers, the fare will rise from ₹2395 to ₹2215 after the increase.

Good news for short-distance travelers! There will be no fare hike for journeys up to 215 kilometers. This means passengers who travel for daily commutes or short trips won’t have to worry about extra charges.

Railways aims to keep this fare increase minimal to avoid burdening passengers too much. There won’t be any changes to discounts for seniors or students, and fares for local and suburban trains will stay the same. The new fares will come into effect on December 26, 2025.

Summary:

  • Indian Railways is raising train fares from December 26, 2025.

  • The increase applies to journeys longer than 215 kilometers.

  • Non-AC train fares will rise by 1 paise per kilometer; AC trains by 2 paise.

  • No change in fares for journeys up to 215 kilometers.

  • Discounts for seniors and students remain unchanged.
