The emergency department of Darbhanga Medical College Hospital (DMCH), which is considered the lifeline of North Bihar, is facing a shortage of oxygen gas that does not meet the required quality standards. Despite running the plants continuously for six hours to test the purity of oxygen, it was found that the quality did not meet the designated standards, leading to the plants being shut down before the specified time.
During the inspection, it was revealed that the purity of oxygen in the plant of the Gynecology department was only 64.2%, while in the Neonatology department, it was only 54%. The plant was also unable to generate sufficient pressure. Due to a fire caused by a transfer of electricity during the process of starting the emergency department’s plant, the purity of oxygen could not be tested. According to the standards, oxygen must have a minimum purity of 90% to be used for patients.
Currently, the plant is running, but the oxygen being generated is not suitable for use by patients. The hospital administration has requested maintenance from the Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL) multiple times. As a result of the plants being shut down, the hospital is supplying oxygen to patients through cylinders, which incurs significant expenses for the administration.
Due to the lack of maintenance, all three plants have been non-operational for several months. The designated agencies are demanding a substantial amount of money for maintenance. The agency has requested 75% of the total amount in advance. The hospital administration has made multiple requests to BMSICL for the maintenance of the plants.
