The Vigilance Directorate in Jharkhand has arrested three individuals in a case related to financial investigation concerning land scams. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had already arrested former Chief Minister Hemant Soren and others in this case. The Vigilance Directorate stated that Sanjeet Kumar, Mohammad Irshad, and Tapas Ghosh have been arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Tampering with Land Records
All of them have been arrested under the allegations of manipulation and tampering with land records. It is alleged that they altered the nature of the land in documents to make it appear non-saleable. The central agency mentioned that the land in question was not saleable under the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT Act), which protects the rights of tribal lands.
Involvement of Prominent Figures
In connection to the financial investigation related to land scams, a total of 25 individuals, including CM Hemant Soren, IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, and Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pratap, have been arrested so far. The case is linked to 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi, which was allegedly illegally occupied. The agency filed a charge sheet against Soren and other accused on March 30 in a special PMLA court.
Misuse of Official Position
The Enforcement Directorate has also seized land in Ranchi. According to the ED, Soren and several others misused their official positions in activities related to illegal encroachments and seizures of land properties. The ED claimed that there is an active land mafia racket in Jharkhand, which manipulates land records in Ranchi.
