Increasing Litchi Production in Bihar

Identification of litchi is usually associated with Muzaffarpur, Bihar, but now its cultivation is rapidly increasing in other districts as well. In Goraul block of Vaishali district, the cultivation of Shahi litchi is thriving despite the scorching heat and loo affecting not only the people but also the crops. Ratnesh Kumar, a resident of Goraul, is continuously claiming and irrigating his litchi orchard to ensure that the production is not affected in any way.

Profitable Litchi Cultivation

In February, litchi starts to appear and by the end of May, it is fully ripe for harvesting. Within four months, a revenue of ₹600,000 can be generated from a 5-acre litchi orchard. Ratnesh Kumar has started supplying litchis not only to local traders but also outside Bihar once they are fully ripe. Around 100 or more laborers work in a 5-acre litchi orchard, helping generate a substantial income within a short period.

Benefits of Agriculture

Ratnesh Kumar explains that their ancestors had planted orchards in each acre, but they increased the number of orchards when they took over the business. With 50 trees planted in each acre, after deducting all expenses within four months, a profit of ₹125,000 is earned. This income sustains their household and family expenses, allowing them to experiment with new farming techniques each year for a stable livelihood.
