Introduction

The Makhana Mahotsav was organized today at the Gyan Bhawan in Patna. The event was inaugurated by Bihar’s Agriculture Minister Mangal Pandey. This two-day festival saw the participation of Makhana producers from various districts of Bihar showcasing their Makhana products. 85% of Makhana is produced in Bihar.

Promoting Makhana Cultivation

The main objective of organizing this festival is to increase the popularity of Makhana cultivation in Bihar. The government of Bihar is helping farmers to increase their production and make it available in the market. The aim is to make our farmers prosperous by expanding the production area and involving more farmers.

Significance of Makhana

Makhana is a aquatic crop, with over 85% of its production in the entire country taking place in Bihar. Bihar is the leading producer of Makhana in India. On August 16, 2022, the Indian government granted a GI tag to Mithila Makhana, highlighting the uniqueness of Bihar in the Makhana production sector.

Export Potential

Due to the numerous health benefits of Makhana, its demand is expected to increase in the near future. Makhana is exported not only to neighboring countries but also to countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Gulf countries. With the increasing awareness of the nutritional value of Makhana, its export potential is likely to grow.
