Historic Wheeler Senate House of Patna University Renamed
The historic Wheeler Senate House of Patna University will now be known as Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Anushad Bhawan. The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the Patna University Syndicate after receiving a letter from Raj Bhavan on Monday. All members of the syndicate unanimously agreed to the name change directed by Raj Bhavan.
Chief Minister Shares Experience
The modernization of Wheeler Senate House was jointly inaugurated by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on September 5. During the inauguration, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar shared his experience regarding the importance of the building. He mentioned that Jayaprakash Narayan had initiated a movement from this very hall, inspiring numerous students to contribute to the movement instead of focusing solely on their studies.
Students Spread JP’s Message
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also highlighted that students were actively spreading Jayaprakash Narayan’s message by visiting colleges and departments. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar supported the name change, as he believed that calling the historical building Wheeler Senate House was reminiscent of colonial rule. It is worth noting that Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore had also visited this assembly hall in 1936.
Governor’s Proposal and Meeting Details
The Governor initially proposed naming the assembly building after Rabindra Nath Tagore. However, on September 5, the University received instructions from Raj Bhavan to change the name to Jaiprakash Narayan Anushad Bhawan. In response, an emergency syndicate meeting was called, and the nomination proposal was sent to Raj Bhavan. The meeting was attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Girish Kumar Choudhary, Provost Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, DSW Prof. Anil Kumar, and other members of the Academic Council.
Established in 1925
The Wheeler Senate House was established in 1925 with donated funds. Pappu Verma, a member present at the meeting, commended the initiative by Raj Bhavan for the name change. The University has now submitted the proposal to Raj Bhavan, and the building will be known as Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan Anushad Bhawan moving forward.
