Historic Bridge Over Gandak River to be Replaced
An old bridge built by the British over the Gandak River, which passes through the city, is soon going to become history. The bridge was used by the British to run a train for the first time between Samastipur and Darbhanga on April 17, 1874. The railway authorities have started the work of dismantling this old bridge to make way for two new railway bridges.
Construction of the Old Bridge
The engineers of the Samastipur Railway Division informed that in 1874, the British had built a 180-meter long bridge for a small line on this bridge. At that time, trains were used to transport relief materials along with passengers. Later, the small line was converted into a main line. Now, two new railway bridges have been constructed in place of this old bridge.
Dismantling of the Old Bridge
The railway authorities have declared the old bridge as scrap and have put it up for auction. The work of dismantling the gates and other parts of the bridge has begun. The gates, railway lines, tracks, and other metal parts of the bridge are being dismantled to make way for the new bridges.
Improvement in Train Services
After the operation of trains on the new bridges, the old bridge has been declared defunct. The gates, railway lines, and other metal parts of the bridge will be removed within a month. During floods, the water of the river used to submerge this bridge, causing disruptions in train services between Samastipur and Darbhanga. However, with the construction of the new bridges, the situation has improved.
