Nashik of Bihar: Onion Cultivation in Gaya
In the district of Gaya, the Neemchak Bathani block area of Barauni and Sirmaur villages are known for onion cultivation, often referred to as “Mini Nashik.” Farmers here cultivate onions on nearly 100 bighas of land, with approximately 25% of the village’s farmers engaged in this commercial onion cultivation.
Special Variety and Harvesting Process
The farmers in Gaya cultivate the Sukh Sagar variety of onions, which require a temperature of around 30 degrees Celsius for optimal growth. The cultivation process starts in October with nursery preparation, planting in December, and harvesting by the end of March, yielding about 4-5 quintals of onions per kattha.
Economic Impact and Market Conditions
Despite water scarcity issues, Gaya farmers have been successful in onion cultivation, sending their produce to the Nalanda-Bihar Sharif market. This year, farmers are fetching prices between Rs. 1200-1300 per quintal, a significant improvement from the previous year’s rates. With an annual turnover of 80-90 lakhs, farmers in Barauni and Sirmaur villages are reaping economic benefits from onion cultivation, highlighting the potential of this agricultural practice in the region.
