The Congress had announced a meeting of the opposition alliance, the Indian Alliance, immediately after suffering a decisive defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Hindi-speaking states. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee denied having any knowledge of the meeting. Samajwadi Party leader and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav distanced himself from the Indian Alliance meeting in Delhi after causing trouble for Congress candidates in Madhya Pradesh. The date of the meeting in Delhi, originally scheduled for December 6th, was changed to December 17th. Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar who was supposed to host the meeting in Patna on June 23rd, has also announced that he will not be attending. With this, Congress’s competition with Nitish has become equal.
